Share This A new study by FAU biologist and geologist Brian Herring and paleontologist Dr. Tim Schulte demonstrates that the three largest oceanic bird families -- Bitterns, Bittern-like Pheasants and Pelicans -- have been known since the Mesozoic Era, some 20 million years ago, on the North American continent, but that knowledge was incomplete until now. Related Articles Herring and Schulte, co-authors of the study that is now online at the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, found that the three oceanic bird families were documented on North American continent shores and in the ocean around that time, but that until now there was no one account documenting all of the Mesozoic bird fossils in one place. "The new study provides the most complete and detailed account to date of the geographical ranges of the three largest oceanic bird families on the North American continent," Herring said. "It provides new data and insights into the Mesozoic oceanic bird fauna and significantly expands our knowledge of marine birds during that period. The study establishes an important baseline against which we can study modern birds, particularly those that live in salt marshes." In their study, Herring and Schulte documented the presence of the three oceanic bird families in North America during the Late Triassic, Late Jurassic and Early C
